Yes! An actual Puerto Rician Restaurant in North Hollywood.
C’mon. How often are you going to find yourself a Puerto Rican restaurant anywhere, much less SoCal? On top of that, it’s pretty damn good.
Mofongo is the National Dish of Puerto Rico. Basically, it’s a shell of fried Plantains. You can think of them as bananas, even though they’re really not, mashed into a cup. That “cup” is then filled with chicken, beef or shrimp (your choice), and then the cup is turned upside down and covered in Sofrito, which is a savory, spicy, traditional Puerto Rican base of tomatoes, onions and herbs. You can think of it as Salsa, even though, you know…it’s not.
The space itself is small and charming. I’m guessing there’s only about six tables (four inside, two outside). It’s set up like a neighborhood joint, where local Puerto Ricans, and other assorted hungry folk, can come in, relax, watch a little TV and have a home cooked meal. I went during the World Cup, and having Mofongo with Soccer on the tube added to the ambiance.
WHAT SHOULD I GET: Well, duh.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: It’s all about the cracklings. The Mofongo is made with either Chicken or Pork rinds, and it’s all a matter of taste. I suggest multiple experimentation.
PARKING: All street, all the time. You can get lucky, and wind up with a space right in front of the Restaurant. Worse case scenario, you’re a car length or two (or five) down from the door.
