Is It Any Good?

A damn good Culver City bar packing Roy Choi’s even better Kogi BBQ Food Truck Menu.

So, you’re going to be hearing the name Roy Choi a lot if you live in Los Angeles. He started off with a Food Truck, the ever popular Kogi BBQ. He’s followed that up with the very hot, very trendy, and ultimately very good A-Frame.

But sandwiched in between there, whilst he was still an up-and-comer, there was Alibi. Now, Roy doesn’t own Alibi, a perfectly fine bar on the Westside, but what makes them extraordinary is that they serve his Food Truck menu there. And for that, you’ll be glad you came, unless of course, you’re like me and just finished stuffing your face at A-Frame.

Alibi is one of those rarities that can only exist in Hollywood. It’s a neighborhood joint, populated by the locals…only those locals happen (for the most part) to work in the Entertainment industry. Will you see celebrities there? Hmmm…probably not. Will you see big time Executives there? Hmm…maybe, but you won’t recognize them, and they won’t making an effort to make themselves known. They’re here to drink, and to eat.

What you will see, once you walk inside, is a somewhat usual, trinagle shaped bar, ringed by the most Ketel-One Bottles you’ve ever seen outside of a distributorship. (Someone got a good deal). You can get the Liquor you want (or has been said, most likely need), but you can also stuff your face with Kogi BBQ’s finest.

It’s a friendly place. All are welcome, no nasty stares suggesting you don’t belong. Your money’s still good here, and if you’re hungry, the food will be too.

WHAT SHOULD I GET?: Looking, and drooling, over the menu that first time, on a full stomach, I saw much to want to want to chomp into. So much time, so little stomach. Remember, what Roy basically became famous for was melding his traditional Korean tastes and aggresive flavors with a touch of the Mexican, for a truly Los Angeles combintation. The Kogi three taco combo, with Salsa Rojo is a well-known item to the customers of the Food Truck version. And of course, there’s the Sesame Quesadilla, also with Salsa Rojo. Whatever you do, get something cold to drink. This stuff was made to go with Beer.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Just remember, Alibi is a bar first, not a restaurant, just because their food is really, really good.

PARKING: Alibi has their own lot, but it’s really small. Only holds 8-12 cars, tops. It’s also free, which is always a good thing. I found a spot, but then again, I was rolling on a Thursday. Your weekend experience is probably going to vary…a lot. There should be plenty of street parking, even on a Weekend night, the trick is going to be, hard far are you willing to walk?
