Is It Any Good?

A Small Plates/Wine Bar on the Westside.

A.O.C. on Urbanspoon
A.O.C. on Foodio54

What do say about A.O.C.? The place is a Westside Wine Bar that manages one of the great Wine collections in town. You’ll have a great meal there, attended by first class, know-their-stuff Waitstaff. They’re accessible. You can ask them questions about your wine, your food, what have you.

But I’m still not terribly fond of the place.

That’s not to say A.O.C. isn’t always on its game. It is. The food you get is first class. The wine is fantastic.

But after blowing a hundred bucks on a meal for two, I didn’t like the feeling that I had that I was going to have to go elsewhere to finish my meal, and feel…you know…not hungry anymore.

The old A.O.C.

This is a small plates place. They’re real popular right now, but one of the virtues of Small Plate joints is…that they come with a small(er) price. Not so, A.O.C.

What can I say? Four star food, what you’ll get of it.

WHAT SHOULD I GET?: Just because its a small plates meal, doesn’t mean there isn’t anything good here. Remember, talk to your Waiter about what you want to have, and let him or her guide you as to the kind of wine you to get.

And what should you get? Well, try the Hanger Steak with horseradish crème fraîche.  Still remember that one fondly, but for the size (barely feeds one), the price may surprise you. The Duck Confit with Kale-Chestnut Stuffing and Dates also wasn’t bad.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: The Website.  It’s not horrible, it’s just weird.  It took me a few minutes to realize that below the little house graphic in the middle of the page are a series of squares.  Those tiny squares are the website menu options: about, contact, menu, etc.

UPDATE: April 10, 2013: Just so you know, A.O.C. has recently moved.  Just down the block.  The address has been changed on this listing.

PARKING: The street. That’s about it. I don’t even recall them having Valet service. I wound up at a meter on South Crescent, right off 3rd.
