Is It Any Good?

The real thing (as in real Mexican cooking) in Boyle Heights.

Boyle Heights is an old school Mexican neighborhood in Los Angeles. The food you’ll get here is not Tex-Mex, it’s Mex-Mex. So take the idea of Mexican Food that you’ve grown up with (refried beans and cheesy, cheesy, cheesy cheese) and throw them out. El Rinconcito Del Mar’s first, last and only mission is the serve the Mexican clientele of the neighborhood, and they do it well. You should happily take advantage and learn about all the tastes El Torito has been denying you all these years.

When I took my Dad here the first time, he said they served him the best and most inexpensive Lobster he said he’d ever had (at the time).

That being said, if you don’t speak Spanish (and believe it or not, even though I live in Los Angeles, and I don’t) there might be (at certain hours) a bit of a language barrier betwixt you and the staff. Fret not, if there is, I’m sure you can point at a spot on the menu just as good as the next guy, and you’re money is just as good here as anywhere else.

WHAT SHOULD I GET: I went simple. I had the Enchiladas de Queso. Dad partied down, as I’ve said, with the 1/2 Lagonsta Al Mojo De Ajo (Half Lobster in Garlic and Butter) and he was muy happy.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Finally! A safety tip that actually involves a measure of safety! Their “salsa”, and it wasn’t really what you think of as Salsa (its more of a collection of onions and peppers in a small bowl)…was hot as hell. Seriously, I consider myself as having a high spice tolerance, and that thing made my eyes water.

Not that I stopped trying to eat it, mind you.

PARKING: Absolutely, 100%, not a problem. El Rinconcito Del Mar has its own lot, and its friggin’ huge.
