Good, solid Italian in the heart of Pasadena.
The first Mi Piace I went to, unfortunately no longer exists.
The location was in Burbank. It was in a new complex designed to partly house a Virgin Megastore, just across from the restaurant. Across from that was an AMC Academy 8 Theatre. Everyone lived very happily with each other. You’d go eat at Mi Piace. You’d get a ticket to a movie. You’d browse Virgin as you waited. All good.
Then, 2005 hit. We had heavy rainstorms in the Burbank area, and a lot of water accumulated on the Virgin Megastore roof…and said roof collapsed.
Now, what does this have to do with Mi Piace? Well, without the main draw to that shopping complex (Virgin), the place kinda imploded financially…at least for a while. The Mi Piace in Burbank became a Comerica Bank, and the Virgin Megastore’s roof was repaired, just around the time the whole Virgin Megastore franchise went under. It’s a Loehmann’s now.
But Mi Piace still exists…in Old Town Pasadena, and since it’s the original location, you’ll find yourself in good hands there. It reminds me of the kind of place you’d find on the East Coast (then again, so does Pasadena). Big windows, looking out on the street. Big windows showing off various treats. It’s a good, solid Italian place. Probably the best Italian place to go to in Pasadena.
WHAT SHOULD I GET?: Far be it from me to recommend an Italian Joint and just recommend the Lasagna, but…get the Lasagna Di Carne. The herbs and sauce make it special. But this is one of those can’t miss places. I don’t know if they’re re-inventing the wheel or anything. I don’t think they’re in Osteria Mamma’s class, but they’re going to do you right.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: If this were the old Burbank location, I’d say watch out for high winds and rain damage.
PARKING: Decently easy. Your first option should be the Schoolhouse Parking Structure between Green, Raymond and Fair Oaks. All three streets have entrances. Failing that, there’s another structure on South De Lacey. There’s also the Colorado One Parking Structure, as well as Valet Parking provided by the City of Pasadena. Street Parking will be close to impossible.
