Is It Any Good?

Legendary 100 year old Sandwich Shop where the French Dip was apparently invented.

If God made anything better, he kept it for himself…

Many legends surround the tale of the invention of the French Dip (all of them are in the video), but forget ‘em and just try one of the dang things.  You will not regret it. People come from far and wide to try Phillipe’s and after you sit down, you will understand why.

It bears multiple mentions that Phillipe’s make their own mustard, which is super spicy hot, but is the perfect amount of spice for their sandwiches.  Try it on anything else, and you’re taking your life into your hands.

Oh, and the French Dips are incredibly cheap (in the good way).  You can probably walk out of there well fed for under ten bucks.

WHAT SHOULD I GET?: Did you see the video?  Are you looking at that picture?  What are you doing still asking me?

Whatever you do, whatever one of these heaven-sent sandwiches you choose to order, get it double dipped.  Also, order something to drink because that mustard (that they make on the premises) is gonna get ya, no matter what your spice tolerance is.  The Lemonades are delicious, but microscopic in size.  You may want to get something in a can.  Philippe’s also make a nice, but equally spicy chili.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Remember, and this is very important if you’re making your first visit there, Phillipe’s only takes cash. No Credit Cards. There are ATMs on site, but…do you really want to fork another two bucks over to some Bank you never heard of, in addition to the two bucks to your own Bank?

Also, no matter what day you go, just accept the fact that it’s going to be crowded, and be at peace with it.  Don’t worry, the lines move fast.

If you can, get there a bit before the Lunch crush.  Like say, 11:50, because by 12:15 the joint will be jumping.

And it cannot be stressed enough…that Mustard is heavenly…but its gonna getcha.  Get something to drink.

UPDATE: May 22, 2013: Breakfast is a different matter. It’s served from a near McDonald’s like 6:30 to 10:00am.

Those expected the same explosion of taste and invention you got from their French Dipped Sandwiches may be a bit disappointed. They’re not reinventing the wheel here. They’re just trying to get Eggs and Bacon into you at a nice price.

Personally, I thought the Omelettes were fine. Nice orange Cheddar intermingled with cubes of Ham. The hash browns were okay, but just filling. Just so you know, its a generously sized Omelette. Big enough that you may want to skip lunch…which could’ve been one of the French Dip Sandwiches.

The Cake Donuts, freshly made on premises, are fantastic. Had I known they were that good, I would have skipped the pretty good omelette and gotten a few more.

PARKING: Philippe’s has two of its own parking lots, both of them free of charge. One on the same block as the restaurant itself. The other (and larger one) is directly across from the lot on Ord Street.
