Is It Any Good?

A place for…guess what? Pie and Burgers deep in the heart of Pasadena.

The one thing that happens long enough especially when writing a food blog, is that you’re going to come across the institution, the place that’s been where it’s been for a thousand years and ain’t changing for nothin’.

Nor should it, mind you.

Thing is, if you’re a reviewer…what do you do? I mean, cutting on it isn’t worthwhile. After all, it’s been there long enough to have it’s [BLEEP] together. Even if you did want to cut on it, who’d believe you? Praising it to the high heavens seems equally ridiculous. The place in question hardly needs any outside praise to stay in business.

Still, what you should really do for places like the Apple Pan and for Pasadena’s Pie N’ Burger, isn’t so much review, as appreciate.

Pie N’ Burger is as old school as old school gets. I mean, when you walk into the place, the Menu looks like it’s the same menu they’ve had tacked up there since 1963. And from reading the history of the place, it has been…and mind you, that historic menu is a feature, not a bug.

Basically, they’re not screwing around here. They’re making you a Pie or a Burger. I mean, it’s not Rocket Science we’re talking here. Sit down, and enjoy your food.

You walk in, and immediately you’ve stepped back into the back. A long, winding counter greets you. A few of the local Pasadenans are kicking back, enjoying their food, watching a little TV. You sit down, place your order, and wait for them to cook it up. Yeah, you’re going to wait ten minutes or so for to fry up your burger, but so what? This is what quality means, time and a little patience. You want instantaneous, go to Wendy’s.

Can’t say Pie N’ Burger is the best burger I’ve ever had. Again, that wouldn’t be the point. Can say that I tasted the char right off the grill. I can say that if looks like what I had was handcrafted, but not to the point of obsession. No one is ever going to confuse Pie N’ Burger with Umami. Again, that’s not the point.

The point comes in the comfort of an institution, the knowledge of steadiness and comfort. These are not things to be looked down on, especially by the food nerds of the world. Sometimes, the best thing when looking at a Institution, is look at how the people its served regard it. If the love is still there, that’s all you need to know.

WHAT SHOULD I GET?: I think I’m going to establish another rule of mine, in that…if the name of the place is a food item, then if it’s your first time there, you must order that food item.

So, what a shock, I ordered up a Burger with a slice of blueberry pie (They were out of Peach).

Now, mind you the Burger part of Pie N’ Burger comes in three varities: Burger, Turkey Burger and Vegetarian. If nothing else, Pie ‘N Burger makes your ordering process simple as…yes…pie.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Nothing important. Like I said, don’t go in expecting Umami, Go Burger or any other reinvention of the Burger place. It is what it is, and that’s kinda the point.

PARKING: You know? For once, I’m not sure. There is a lot around back of Pie N’ Burger, which they seem to share with a number of other establishments. But what do I know? For once, I walked to the place.
