There are a lot of Cuban Restaurants in Burbank.
I mean you probably have more choices in Burbank if you’re Cuban American, as opposed to Chinese American.
Taking the space of the former Guantanamera, El Cirollo surprised me. I’m not going to make the claim that El Cirollo is as good as those other two places I just named, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. There’s no shame to their game. They have a nice variety of Cuban dishes on the menu, including a few I haven’t seen before. Their Cooks are pretty damn good, and most of all…you will have yourself a nice meal.
I get the feeling they’re more set up for a late night crowd, or later night eating. Certainly folks from Warner Bros. or Disney can file in here after work and relax, have a bite and a beer. I’m not sure what there is to do around there afterwards. If you want to see a movie, or take in some Comedy at Flappers, you’re going to have to get in your car and go elsewhere. The closest thing to entertainment nearby is Costco. (Though I will say that the former Guantanamera provided a nice meal while I was getting my tires changed.)
WHAT SHOULD I GET?: I went in a different direction this time. I went for the Lechón Asado, which is a oven roasted marinated pork leg, served sliced and topped with caramelized onions. This may not be everyone’s cup of tea, as it is not a slice of Pork most folks (myself included) are used to. I probably should have gotten my basic pork dish like I get at Mambos, but I liked this, I particularly liked the flavor of the sauce they came up with, happily sopping it up with my rice. Of course, the meal came with some bread, again good. And they serve Materva (Cuban Soda), well now I’m a happy man.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: I may just be me, but El Cirollo can be a touch hard to find. It’s buried in the shady nook of a two level Strip Mall. If you see a McDonalds, you’re just about there. Oh, and it’s close to Costco. That’s a clue, too.
PARKING: Better than it looks. You pull up into a parking lot that appears at first glance to be so small as to be perpetually filled, but there is another Lot just in the back, not particularly visible from the road. You pull back there, and you’ll find plenty of spaces.
