A lunch place that serves…waffles? …in Alhambra.
I’ve been coming down into Alhambra for a while now, seeking out the good stuff, and every time I did, I kept seeing this place, The Grids under construction.
Savory Waffles and Waffle Sandwiches they said.
Okay, I’m intrigued. As soon as I see its open, I’ma diving in.
Well, the magic week finally came, and instead of going whereever I was going, I all but swerved the car into the lot.
The place really looks amazing. The old building seems modeled on Googie Architecture which was all the rage back in the 60s, and the decor takes advantage of it.
The Grids is really a quickie in and out kind of a lunch place. You step up to the counter, place your order, take your number, and sit on down.
What happens after that? Well…
WHAT SHOULD I GET?: Here’s the thing, I can already tell that The Grids is a fantastic Breakfast place. They make a damn good waffle. Tasty, perfectly crisp on the outside, and sweet and tender on the inside. All the toppings they offer for their Sweet/Breakfasty Waffles look fantastic.
But I went there for lunch.
Not that lunch was terrible, but it was…odd.
I got the Pork Belly Waffle Sandwich (like I was going to get anything else), and bit into it.
Hey, it tasted fine. Wasn’t the best thing ever. Wasn’t the worst, but…the feeling of hanging onto a Waffle that whole time felt…odd. It kinda sorta held together. There were a zing to the sauce that was nice.
But it was odd.
The Waffle Fries on the other hand, were fine and dandy. Be cautious as they are offering you a very big sandwich with a whole mess of fries, but them fries are a must.
Look, no joke. Come on in here for Breakfast. This place looks to be the Da Bomb, and all. Lunch’ll be different. This may be a barrier we all have to cross, getting used to Waffle Sandwiches. But it is way different. I appreciate the fact that The Grids is trying something different. No reason to penalize them for that.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Nothing really to caution you about. They had a nice introductory rate, 15% off, the week of their Grand Opening. Keep an eye out for other offers on the horizon.
PARKING: Pretty good all things considered. The Grids has its own lot, which is usually pretty full. But there is usually a space or two available. You should be all right.
