Is It Any Good?

Below average Tex-Mex place in Burbank.

Wherein I take revenge for a meal actually served cold…or tepid.

I’m going to relate to you the story of a very bad meal.

Don Cuco’s is a chain of Tex Mex Restaurants in and out of the Southland. It is the typifying example of “meh” or more specifically “blah” Tex Mex food. It’s cheese. It’s enchiladas. It’s quesadillas. It’s everything La Serenata or El Riconchito Del Mar isn’t.

It was a meal so bad, that years later I still think about it.

You’d think that a food writer might be able to wax on and on and on about a meal, even a bad meal. But you’d be wrong.

Don Cuco’s was the low point of my Mexican Food experience here in L.A. (Sorry, my Tex-Mex experience here in L.A. There is a difference after all.)

It was the most indifferently prepared Tex-Mex I have ever had in my life. Nothing I like better than being served a tepid Quesadilla that had mostly congealed by the time it hit my table. How this place continues to exist, much less remain a chain is a mystery to me. Being a totally inexperience foodie, I actually…gulp…ate it. And it was flat, flavorless and… (shudder).

If nothing else, I should thank Don Cuco’s for teaching me this lesson. It is a lesson all Foodies and aspiring Foodies should learn at some point.

Okay, so we can consider that a slam…a shredding, an absolute dismissal of a restaurant. Does that mean you should avoid this place like the plague?

Not necessarily. It may have been an off night. Your experience may vary. But this is the danger Restaurants are in, night in and night out. One bad experience can ruin the meal for someone. Ruin the experience, and they might not come back…ever.

All I can say is my experience at Don Cuco’s was a disaster. I haven’t forgiven them for it, all this time later. Which is why I feel very comfortable taking what is otherwise, a pretty cheap shot.

WHAT SHOULD I GET?: Directions to another Mexican Restaurant. I hear there’s a Taco Bell up a block.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: If this review doesn’t serve as one big safety tip, then I don’t know what to tell you…
