Filipino Street Food in Universal City.
It was raining…pouring raining…in Southern Freakin’ California when I went into Kalye Hits. Pouring down. And it never rains in Southern California, right LL Cool J?
But I cannot imagine a better meal for you than a bit of Suckling Pig on a bed of rice to make those rainy day blues go away.
Now, I’m sure there are a number of you out there who are not going to react well to the whole concept of a suckling pig. I’m sure a number of you would not react well to the sight of a whole hog, slowly being roasted over an open fire, with a massive spit jammed through its mouth and out its backside. Whereas the only negative reaction I have to a whole suckling pig is…where do I start?
Fortunately, Kalye Hits made that decision for me, and does it delicious style. Your Suckling Pig comes at you in pre cut chunks, with plenty of tasty skin to go along with. But the surprise to me, and the thing I haven’t tasted before (since I may have mentioned that I want to get to know Philippine food better) is the Sarsa Sauce, also known as Lechon Sauce or Sarsa Ng Lechon. That stuff was delicious as hell. Seriously, I wanted Sarsa Sauce on everything for a minute there. It was that good.
Kalye Hits itself is a tiny affair. A small shoebox sized restaurant stuffed into a slightly hard to get into corner of Universal City. (They’re calling it Hollywood, Google Maps lists it as Los Angeles…go figure, it’s really Universal City). From what I understand the Philippine community already knows its there, and has got its back. But for you making a visit, the only issue-slash-hurdle is going to be the parking. (We’ll go into that a bit more in a minute). It’s a nice, in between place. Yeah, you’re sitting down with proper forks and knives, but you’re ordering at the counter and relaxing a bit (maybe doing a bit of food blogging) as you wait for your meal to arrive
Kalye Hits was good, good stuff. It’s one of those up and comer, needs your support restaurants, and I so want you all to give it your support.
WHAT SHOULD I GET?: Suckling Pig. Suckling Pig. Suckling Pig…or Sizzling Pig. Whatever. I can’t remember for sure, and the Kalye Hits Website is undergoing a makeover.
But I still loved me some Philippine Lechon.
Basically, there are a lot of ten dollar lunch plates, with all manner of meats and treats, but getting anything Pork from a Philippine place is always a good idea. Start there, and work your way around the menu.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: The most important safety tip there is…is about the parking, so scroll down.
Though I will say, it looks like the only time this restaurant is closed is on Saturday.
PARKING: Borderline nightmarish…if you really want some Lechon (and who doesn’t want some Lechon) you’re going to gamble because Kalye Hits doesn’t have a lot in the way of Parking.
Seriously, it’s shares its retail space with a Gas Station next door to it, and there are maybe, MAYBE five spaces in front of the complex (three of which are always occupied.) If you get there right at 12pm, you should be able to snag one of the coveted spots in front of the Restaurant. Failing that, I don’t know…I just don’t know.

The next street over is Dos Palos Drive, which goes up the hill and circles around back of the restaurant. It’s a residential street, so maybe, maybe there’ll be a space up there, but at least you can swing around and try again.
But seriously, the only downside of this restaurant is the parking. It’s a pain in the ass to get in. Once you get in, you’ll be happy as hell, but…
