Really good Malaysian in the Farmer’s Market…at least, as far as I know.
What do you know about Malaysian food? Not much? Join the club.
But it’s a club I want out of, as soon as possible, because I like Malaysian food.
You see what’s out there, and you see the combination of local ingredients and recipes, and then you top it off with Chinese, Indian flavors, it’s little wonder that Singapore is one of the stations on the Foodie cross.
Singapore’s Banana Leaf has been one of those places “I’ve been meaning to try” for a while now. A “one of these days” places.
Well, the day finally came and I wasn’t disappointed. Not in the least.
Sitting next door to Pinkberry in the outer edge of the Farmer’s Market, this place has a steady and reliable amount of business going for it. The people who eat here know their food. The people who order here seem to know their food. Best of all, it’s made fresh for you right as you order. Nothing like handling your Roti fresh off the oven, having it bounce in your hands in delightful anticipation.
Like with JTYH Noodle, I got the noodles. And like with JTYH, the first bite wasn’t extraordinary. Nor the second or the third, but a magical thing happened as I chowed down. The more I ate, the more I wanted.
I also managed to get it with (what for me) was just the right amount of heat.
It’s a cash only establishment. It’s also a walk up, order and wait for your number to be called place. Singapore’s Banana Leaf does have it’s own set of Seats and Table fresh from a 1970s era Pier 1 Catalog, but if those are filled (and a great many of them will be), you can saunter either north or south to find more available seating in the General Farmer’s market.
WHAT SHOULD I GET?: I started off with Roti Paratha, which is a grilled Indian Bread served with a vegetarian curry dipping sauce. I approached this so, so, so gingerly since the dipping sauce looked like it was 100% ground peanuts (and that’s a thing for me). But no, it’s vegetables. It was tasty as all get out, and the Roti itself comes piping hot off the grill.
For the main course, I went with Mee Goreng, which is Indian style pan fried noodles. When you order, you choose a spice level, and go from there. I added chicken because, well…I’m that kind of guy, but looking back, the idea of adding Tofu doesn’t strike me as a bad one. I got it Medium Spicy, and that was just enough of a kick for me. But then again, I’m part Texan, so you might want to take that into consideration when you order.
Still, some spicy is the way to go.
The Laska Soup also tempted me. It’s a spicy coconut curry soup with some rice noodles, tofu and bean sprouts. Also, I’d take a loooong look at the Nasi Goreng, which is pan fried rice, veggies and eggs.
The Restaurant is located on the side of the Farmer’s Market closest to Third Street side of the complex. Right next door to Pinkberry.
Also, Singapore Banana Leaf does not have its own website (hence the Facebook links). Still, you’d be amazed at all the very passionate debate going on about it. Read one lady on Urbanspoon who complained that she had gone to Singapore and that the Laska she had there was better.
