Is It Any Good?

Your standard take-out Chinese place in Culver City.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. There are Chinese Restaurants for people from the mainland, and Chinese-American Restaurants for everyone else.

Golden China is more of the latter, more of a Chinese-American Restaurant, trout they try to serve some old school, old world dishes…with mixed success.

Still, it’s a comfortable joint. A nice spot where you can have your dinner. The Owner and Staff are lovely people and want to see you taken care of.  Heck, you might even see some magic while you wait for your dinner.

No, actual magic.

It’s okay. It’s average. You’re not skipping out on Monterey Park or Alhambra to come to here. It’s perfectly fine for Take-Out, and sports a large Vegetarian Menu.

WHAT SHOULD I GET?: This restaurant is popular with friends because it’s got a decently expansive Vegetarian menu. Nothing like Happy Family or anything, but for a place in the heart of Culver City, pretty large indeed.

My first go round with Golden China did not go well. I ordered the Beef Noodle Soup, the national dish of Taiwan. Something that’s become a favorite of mine with it’s strong beef stock, and picked treasures mixed within. That’s what it’s supposed to be.

Instead, I got a bowl of noodles in weak beef stock, with some cuts of stir fry meat in it and some spaghetti noodles. I guess people don’t order this too much. To say I was disappointed, was an understatement.

Second go round, I ordered something way more basic. Bar-B-Q Pork Fried Rice, which wasn’t bad. Not the greatest thing ever, but not something I had to chore my way through. I liked it.

I also got some Fried Dumplings, which came fresh out of the pan, and were big as all get out. I was actually impressed by these. They were too big to be bought at the store, and seemed hand made.

So mixed verdict on the food. The more conventional you order, the better it’ll wind up being.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Like I said its a neighborhood joint. Most of their business is carry out.

PARKING: Free, and decently plentiful. Because of the turnaround of to-go orders, I’ve been able to park right in front of the door on most nights I’ve visited. At worst you’ll have to travel all of three or four car lengths to get to the door.
