Burgers and Sausages in Pasadena.
Yeah, that name…
The first thing I thought when I saw the name “Big Daddy’s Fire Grill” was that it was a Barbecue Joint. Heck, that’s the way a friend of my described it when we drove over for lunch.
Big Daddy’s Fire Grill sits on a small spit of land in the industrial part of Pasadena, where all the auto body shops, storage facilities and supply stores are. It’s on the same side of the street as a very popular In-N-Out Burger.
Big Daddy’s Fire Grill itself is a converted house with a decent sized outdoor seating area. Going inside, its one of those places that seems to have more seating outdoors than indoors, but that’s okay. I’m in the mood for some Brisket, maybe some ribs, and–
–oh, it’s just a Hot Dog and Burger place.
Okay, that’s disappointing.
I guess I…maybe should have looked at the fine print.
No. Literally. Fine print. It says right there on the sign…in admittedly smaller letters than the rest, but it’s right there: Wood Fired, Hand Crafted…Burgers, Grilled Sandwiches, Dawgs & Sausages.
Don’t I look like an idiot.
Big Daddy’s Fire Grill is a counter service place. Step up. Order. Take a number (Grab your drink if you’ve ordered it), and sit down.
Don’t know what else to say about this place. It’s not comfortable enough. Though, it’s the height of summer, I’m glad to be sitting inside. TVs are on. Some manner of…game is going on. (Hey, I like me some Sports, but I’m working here.) And it’s uh…it’s uh…place.
Yeah. Big Daddy’s Fire Grill. It’s a…place.
WHAT SHOULD I GET?: Fighting my way past my disappointment, I went ahead an ordered the The Bacon and Grilled Cheese Sandwich. And…for a Grilled Cheese Sandwich it was pretty well prepared. Buttered and toasted bread on both sides, crunchy Bacon inside. Not bad, but I should warn you, those expecting an ooey-gooey Grilled Chese experience are going to be disappointed. If there was a flaw in my Sandwich it was that there didn’t seem to be enough cheese in the thing.
But it was okay. I mean, what? It’s a Grilled Cheese Sandwich. They’re not exactly making a cookbook here.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Nothing really to worry about here. Parking is the main thing.
PARKING: Deceptively good. You pull up to the restaurant, and from an initial look, it doesn’t look like there’s much in the way of parking at all. But if you turn down North Craig Ave, there are spaces there. It looks like they’re a part of a neighboring business, but apparently the spaces are Big Daddy’s Fire Grill. Park there and you’ll be fine. Most people, it seems walk from the neighborhood.
