Is It Any Good?

It’s an Izakaya in San Gabriel, and…and…??

This is one of the circumstances where I’m at a loss for words.

Usually, when you read a sentence like that it means “my breath is taken away”, I mean it was just so damn good I don’t know what to say…

Not so much here.

I actually wound up coming here when the place I had first identified around the corner didn’t look all that appetizing…at least from the outside. So, off to Zomato I went trying to find something, anything else.

I wound up here at Icho Izakaya.

I cannot stress the term “wound up” enough.

Seriously, I have struggled for weeks to come up with something to write about this place. I delayed, delayed and delayed some more.

Finally, one term came to mind….the Mendoza Line.

Never heard of the Mendonza Line? Well, it’s a Baseball Term…

The Mendoza Line is an expression in baseball in the United States, deriving from the name of shortstop player Mario Mendoza, whose mediocre batting average is taken to define the threshold of incompetent hitting. The cutoff point is most often said to be .200 (although Mendoza’s career average was .215) and, when a position player’s batting average falls below that level, the player is said to be “below the Mendoza Line”.

Icho Izakaya is literally sitting at on the Mendoza line. It’s fine, but it’s just…well, there.

The food was good, but hardly anything to write home about. I mean it’s a comfortable space. The Waitstaff was plenty friendly, but as I sit here writing of the experience of what I had, I’m kinda having a hard time remembering. It’s not like that it was bad, but…

…eh, thank God for Photographs.

WHAT SHOULD I GET?: Okay…okay…

Flipping through…flipping through. Where did I put those…

HERE WE ARE. Oh…oh yes. Now I TOTALLY remember what I got.

The place is called Icho Izakaya, so I got…Izakaya food. I got the Gyoza, and they were…

Well…

The Gyoza at Icho Izakaya.

What you want me to say? They were Gyoza. They were…there. Prepared just fine, and decently tasty.

And I got, a Salad…and it was a Salad.

The House Salad at Icho Izakaya.

After that I collected myself a mountain of Sausage Fried Rice, and it was…

Look, this was not a mistake on the part of the restaurant, this was a mistake on the part of the author. I saw the word Sausage, and lost my head. Fried Rice isn’t exactly something that’s going to show off the skills of the wares of the Kitchen. It’s…Fried Rice. Even with chunks of Sausage, it was…

Actually, it was pretty good. But I’m not sure I should grade a restaurant on how well it does Sausage Fried Rice. So, I’m giving it a pass this time.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Eh, not much to report here either, which is a good thing.

PARKING: This was not so bad. Parking is free and plentiful. Icho Izakaya sits on the corner of a small mini-mall, so it’s got the spaces in front of it, and around the corner, so plenty of choices.

And if the spaces are all taken up, God Bless ‘em. It’d certainly shut this review up.

But if they’re filled, trust me. Move on.
