The “neighborhood joint” is a concept we keep talking about over and over again. The idea of the small, comfortable space, the restaurant that maybe only the locals know about. You can walk to, and order from by barely looking at the menu. They come in all kinds of shapes, all kinds of sizes.

Then again, America itself comes in all kinds of shapes, all kinds of sizes.

Tasty Noodle House (Facebook listing only) is a neighborhood joint. It’s comfortable and familiar. It’s all the things I described.

It’s also darn near empty. I mean, this place is highly rated on Urbanspoon, what gives?

Oh, that’s what gives. People are in an out of here all the time, but mostly getting to-go orders and leaving with them. I’m the only guy (at least today) who’s sticking around to have their food fresh out of the oven. When I walked in I swear they were surprised that I wasn’t getting something to go.

Also, Tasty Noodle House is darn near hidden from the street. You drive by, and odds are…you’re going to miss it, as it’s strategically placed off in the corner, hidden in the shadow of a local Dry Cleaners.

It’s only two doors down form Golden Deli. I can imagine some measure of frustrated parties waiting to get their Pho on turning here instead. It’s not a bad deal.

This is one of those places that is hard to write about. You’re not coming here for ambiance. They’re not setting gastronomic world on its head. They’re serving good food, and better-than decent prices. At the end of the day, that’s all I wanted.

WHAT SHOULD I GET?: My first visit (and I can totally see me coming back) started with the Sautéed String beans. (What is it about me and String Beans?), and some Steamed Pork Buns.

The String Beans were great, very lively, very tasty. The only problem I had was they also came with tiny, tiny, micro shrimp, each barely a quarter of an inch long. This is a slight problem for me, as your humble food blogger has a bit of a seafood allergy, but I was diligent in picking them off, and wasn’t affected in the slightest. Seafood Lovers will find much to appreciate here.

The Steamed Pork Buns were okay. Not a bad, or disappointed Okay, just…well, fine. They were straight ahead, on the nose. No surprises, which is kinda what I wanted. There were a lot of them on the plate, and I wound up taking some of them home.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Keep in mind that this is a Cash Only establishment.

PARKING: Free, but not necessarily plentiful. As I’ve come to this Strip Mall, as I’ve come (frequently) to places like Benten Ramen and, of course, Golden Deli, I’ve always been able to get a parking space, but usually far away from the restaurant. So, go in knowing that there are spaces, and there is a lot of turnover, but the lot is usually pretty crowded on any given day or time.
