The truth of it is, even town in America has a place like Thomas Sweet, at least it should.

It’s always THE local Ice Cream joint. It is relentlessly old fashioned. It holds on to it’s traditions pretty damn fiercely, producing a level of confection you just can’t get at the Grocery Store.

In Los Angeles, this place would either be Bennett’s in Mid Town or Fosselman’s in Alhambra.

Here it is Thomas Sweet (Granted, the chain started in New Jersey, but she’s all ours now).

During my long return to D.C., I somehow did not expect a return to Georgetown, who’s University Hospital I was born at. Georgetown is both a town comprised of old style Town-homes and building that really haven’t changed all that much since the War of 1812, and a town where all the rich folks live.

You want a direct comparison Angelenos? It’s Washington, D.C.’s version of Abbott Kinney.

My Stepbrother has been taking his kids here for years, and because of where they are, and where my Dad is now, this is going to have to be a planned trip to get here. But we were close by. We got in a Uber and drove the ten minutes over to get our Ice Cream on.

The store sits on a corner, and large corner of real estate in Georgetown. It was the middle of the week, and everything was closed at around 6pm (just before we got there). But walking in, we got a nice blast of Air Conditioning. After a summer of typical D.C. heat and humidity, this is exactly what we needed.

We needed the Ice Cream too, but…damn if that didn’t feel go.

Step up to the counter, order up…walk away with artery clogging, frozen cream and sugar. Perfection.

Thomas Sweet is right up there with the best of what L.A. has. If you like Bennett’s, you’ll love Thomas Sweet. You like Fosselman’s…you get the idea.

Awesome place. Love my hometown.


WHAT SHOULD I GET?: C’mon.  What do you think?

Oh, what flavor. Right. Right.

I’m just a sucker for a well any made Ice Cream with the name Dulche de Leche, and Lord knows they make it good as can be at Thomas Sweet.

There’s just something unique and even more delicious about the Ice cream that is made from real, farm fresh fresh cream as opposed to…well, whatever comes from the carton. It makes the whole taste, thicker richer, and yes…sweeter, in the way that only natural sugar can give.

Again, just like Bennett’s. Worth every slurp.


IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: Seem to remember whoever was in charge being a wee bit impatient with our large and extended family. Not sure what the deal was. May have been having a bad night, but I remember him being a touch short with her. Not outright rude or anything, but…”Hey you, get on with it already…”

Only bad feeling from an otherwise great place.



About that…

We…Ubered here, and…man am I glad we did.

There weren’t a lot of cars on streets when we were there, and I didn’t see a Parking Lot for Thomas Sweet. Plus, Georgetown is not an easy place to park in, most days. When I was growing up we had to park close to the river and hoof it up the hill to get to Georgetown.

That or take the Metro.

So yeah, Uber or Metro. Your choice.
