git Version Control Software

Image of git Version Control Software

This is the latest open source software created by Linus Torvalds, famed creator of the Linux operating system.

He famously hates CVS (and I guess by extension RCS, which is even worse) and then had a spat with Bit Keeper software who produced a non-free VCS. So he created this one instead so that it there would be a version control software that doesn't suck.

git Version Control Software
I have used CVS in the past (yuck!) and even RCS (DOUBLE YUCK!) and so wanted to be able to do my development on something that worked a lot better, to say the least.

I had considered going to Subversion, as that seems to be the software du jour, but decided against it after reading what Linus had to say regarding other VCSes (ok, so he's probably a bit biased, but hey!).

Well, I can say that after using git for a few days I am suitably impressed!

Admittedly I am a lone developer, but it's been able to do all the stuff I wanted to do (and more of course) fairly painlessless, and without the nasty cryptic syntax of CVS.

Time will tell exactly how enamoured I am with it, but for now I quite like it!

What's good: It's very quick and does the job well
What's bad: A bit tricky to get the hand of at first, as it's quite different from the predessors
Is it any good? Verdict: y
